living ten for two |
Introduction |
Camp is my passion. This may sound funny coming from an eighteen year old, but it is true. I live ten months at home for two months at camp, and I am proud of it. With that being said, camp is not for everyone. Some people would rather spend their summers travelling, studying, or simply spending time on the beach. I personally believe that if someone were to start camp at a young age, then they would love it because camp shapes the person you become. There are a variety of camps out there; you just have to find your niche.
When you think about camp, you may think about movies such as The Parent Trap or Heavyweights. While camps like these do exist, these are not the types of camps I will be focusing on in my autoethnography. An autoethnography is a form of self-reflection and writing that connects personal experience to cultural meanings.
I have been lucky enough to attend Camp Wah-Nee, a seven-week sleep away camp in Torrington, CT, for the past ten years. Like many other camps, Wah-Nee offers a variety of sports and art programs. It is equipped with a theatre, pool, lake, indoor gym, and athletic fields and courts. Campers range from age seven to seventeen and counselors come from all over the world. “Wahneeites” learn a unique set of values that can be applied to all aspects of their lives and lead them to be the best versions of themselves. Somehow after just seven weeks, campers and counselors begin to bleed red and white and live ten months at home for the two months at camp. There is something particularly special about Wah-Nee that is hard to put into words, but I hope that you can feel the “magic” through exploring this site.
